Prevention

WHY IS PREVENTION IMPORTANT?

Oral Health for Overall Health

Proper oral hygiene does not only prevent caries and periodontal disease but also affects our overall health and well-being.

At Tipton Dental we will teach you how to properly brush your teeth and show you the best techniques for maintaining good oral hygiene. We will also advise you when to remove dental plaque which forms on your teeth in places that are harder to clean.

Professional Cleaning

Your cleaning starts with a comprehensive exam including radiographs, oral health and cancer screening.

Our hygienists will perform a professional cleaning that includes tooth scaling, tooth polishing and debridement if too much tartar has accumulated. This involves the use of various instruments or devices to loosen and remove deposits from the teeth. Fluoride varnish is applied to the teeth to support healthy tooth enamel and fight the bacteria that harm teeth and gums.  We recommend having your teeth professionally cleaned every six months.

Periodontal Treatment

You may require periodontal treatment if you suffer from gum disease.

Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that surround and support your teeth. It is a major cause of tooth loss in adults. Because gum disease is usually painless, you may not know you have it. Also referred to as periodontal disease, gum disease is caused by plaque, the sticky film of bacteria that is constantly forming on our teeth. The first step in treating the disease usually involves a special deep cleaning called scaling and root planing. In this treatment the hygienist removes plaque and tartar down to the bottom of each periodontal pocket. This treatment may be done over several visits, depending on your needs.
